Town We Serve – Madison MS

Madison Mississippi is named in honor of President James Madison. It was built along the Illinois Central Railroad in 1856 as Madison Station. Madisonville was already nearby and was a stagecoach stop on the Natchez Trace. It was the county seat of Madison County with two banks, a race track, a hotel, and a wagon factory. Madisonville was abandoned in favor of Madison Station.

The Union Army nearly wiped out Madison Station during a siege in 1863. However, Confederate Major General Stephen Lee set up his command post there in 1864 and later became the first president of Mississippi State University.

In the late 19th Century, the Madison Land Company pushed for northerners to move to the area, so Madison decided to incorporate, and land could be bought for $3.00 per acre. In addition, it said that Mississippi had low debt, and Mississippians were healthier than folks in Massachusetts and New York.
